National Trails of the United States

The 1968 National Trails System Act was enacted to promote public access to trails for people of all abilities and interests, offering activities like hiking, biking, camping, and historical education. The system includes National Scenic, Historic, and Recreation Trails, as well as one National Geologic Trail, spanning all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Congress authorizes Scenic and Historic Trails, while Recreation Trails are designated by federal departments. Managed by various agencies and supported by volunteers and organizations, the system embodies a nationwide vision of interconnected trails, enriching recreation and education while showcasing the value of national investment.
