How do I install GPS USA on a Windows Vista operating system?
When
installing software, Vista may ask you to 'Allow' the installer program to run,
and might require you to enter an administrator password to proceed. Follow the
on-screen instructions, allowing Vista to run the setup.exe installer.
You should be able to install to the suggested 'Program Files' location, but if
you experience any problems with this, please click the 'Browse...' button
during installation and change the install location to the following:
"c:\users\public\topo!". This will allow any user account on the PC
to run the application.
If the program icon does not appear in the Windows Start menu, you can add one
manually by right-clicking on the program icon and choosing 'Pin to Start
Menu'. Locate the program icon by clicking 'Start > Computer' and browsing
into the install folder (usually at "c:\program files\topo!").
If you have trouble running an update that you have downloaded from this
website, try right-clicking on its icon and choosing 'Run as Administrator'.

files.
Pocket TOPO!
Pocket TOPO! is an extension to TOPO! State Series, Back Roads Explorer 3D, and Weekend Explorer 3D software that enables you to export maps to your PDA and to take advantage of all the TOPO! features when you are away from your computer. Add notes, symbols and routes to Pocket TOPO! and they will transfer to your PC the next time you synchronize. Pocket TOPO! works with both Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds.
How do I activate Pocket TOPO!
If you haven’t purchased Pocket TOPO! in a box, it can be activated with an unlock code. Pocket TOPO! unlock codes are available for $19.95 over the phone by calling 800-962-1643
How do I install Pocket TOPO! from the disc?
1. Insert the Pocket TOPO! CD-Rom.
2. Run “Setup.exe” file from this disc.
3. Open your TOPO! State series.
4. Click “Handhelds” from the menu bar and select “Install Pocket TOPO!”
5. Follow the on screen prompts.
Why am I being prompted for an unlock code when I try to use Pocket TOPO!?
Pocket TOPO! is a add-on feature that must be activated with an unlock code.
Why doesn’t my Pocket TOPO! feature work anymore?
Reinstalling or upgrading TOPO! or related programs may temporarily prohibit you from using your Pocket TOPO! functions. If this has happened to you, please call 800-962-1643 with your nine digit serial number and customer ID to receive a new activation code.
What can I export with Pocket TOPO!?
You can export maps from TOPO! to Pocket TOPO! and place notes, freehand routes, text, and symbols on a map and they will all export with the map to Pocket TOPO!. The same goes for importing maps from Pocket TOPO! into TOPO!. However, GPS routes and waypoints will not transfer either way. In order to export notes to Pocket TOPO!, there is a specific option that must be checked in Preferences.
Go to View>Preferences and Settings…>Printing/Exporting>Additional Settings and check the box next to “Print Relevant Notes When Printing Maps.”
Will Pocket TOPO! work with my Bluetooth?
Bluetooth will work with TOPO! and Pocket TOPO!, provided the Bluetooth/USB/serial connection is set up to get the NMEA GPS signals via a "serial COM port" (either real or emulated) on a laptop or Pocket PC device. Please verify you are using the NMEA setting and try one of the three options under 'Handhelds': Show current GPS Position, Mark current GPS position, or Setup Automatic Tracking.
Is there a Pocket TOPO! upgrade that will allow my Bluetooth to work with my Palm?
There are no updates planned for Pocket TOPO! It is highly unlikely that support for connecting Bluetooth GPS units to Palm devices running Pocket TOPO! will be added. Pocket TOPO! is compatible with Bluetooth GPS connections, but the system requirements are that the Bluetooth GPS must show up on a serial port. Bluetooth GPS units will not show up on a serial port when using a Palm device.
Will Pocket TOPO! work with my iQue M5?
We have completed the testing on the Garmin iQUe M5 and have discovered that it is compatible with the TOPO! 4 upgrade, TOPO! state series and Pocket TOPO!. In order to do live tracking, the settings in the M5 you would want are: NMEA ($GPGGA), no model, 9600 baud rate, and COM 2.

Pocket TOPO! will run on "Pocket PC devices", including "Pocket PC phones". However, it will not run on "smartphones", even if the smartphone has Windows Mobile 5.0 on it.
Here's some info about the differences between devices:
Setup differs depending on the kind of Windows Mobile powered device you have: a Pocket PC phone or a smartphone. If your device has a stylus and you can write on the screen, it is a Pocket PC phone. Otherwise, it is a smartphone. Also, on Pocket PC phones, the Windows flag logo appears on the top left of the screen. On smartphones, the Windows flag logo appears on the bottom left. The Motorola Q and the Samsung i320 are powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Smartphone. Learn more about Windows Mobile here.
