Battles of the Civil War print page

"Generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where by whom great things suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field, to ponder and dream."

- UNION GEN. JOSHUA L. CHAMBERLAIN

Created originally as a supplement to the April 2005 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine article,“Civil War Battlefields: Saving the Landscape of America’s Deadliest War” (page 62), the Battles of the Civil War Wall Map is a must for students, educators, historians, and civil war aficionados alike.

The main thematic map shows the location of all civil war battles listed as historically significant by the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission in its 1993 report to Congress. The report ranked battles by their impact on the war and made recommendations for preservation of the fields on which they were fought. Major land and naval campaigns are called out in detail, with descriptions and dates.

A timeline of battles extends across the bottom of the sheet showing the battle name, dates, casualties, victor and decisiveness, and cross-referenced to map location. The Turning Points of the War inset map provides snapshots of key events in 1862, 1863, and 1864. The Battle for the Capitals inset provides enhanced map detail of the battles surrounding Washington, D.C. and Richmond, VA.

The Battles of the Civil War map was published in collaboration with the Civil War Preservation Trust and the National Park Service.
